TWO WINNER BETS FOR THE UNIQUE PGA x LPGA PAIRS EVENT
16 pairings will compete in the inaugural Grant Thornton Invitational this week at Tiburon Golf Club. The three-round event takes place Friday through Sunday and each pair is made up of one PGA TOUR player and one LPGA TOUR player.
The format varies for each round, ensuring this is a proper pairs event with both players contributing fully to their team over the course of the tournament. The course will play nearly 800 yards longer for the men when appropriate.
Finau/Korda go into the event as firm favorites at +550 with only Aberg/Sagstrom (+700) also short of the +1000 mark. Off-the-tee accuracy and pairs in-form is certainly the play this week and that’s led us to these potential winners…
THEEGALA/ZHANG (+1100, DraftKings)
This is an exciting pair. A combined age of 46, bringing youthful exuberance as well as plenty of experience already on their respective tours.
Both players registered their first tour win earlier this year. Since Zhang’s win, on her first start, she has logged six top-15 finishes in 13 events. Theegala had been knocking on the door for a while to get his victory, a T19 and missed cut followed but the break into this will likely be exactly what was required.
Theegala won on this course in another pairs event, the QBE Shootout, a little under a year ago. The American has the measure of it and will be able to guide Zhang round, who herself has been punching in impressive stats that suggest she’ll suit it well, most notably 6th on the LPGA TOUR in Greens In Regulation.
CONNERS/HENDERSON (+1200, DraftKings)
The Canadians stand a great chance on form. Conners has hit three top-10s in his last seven events, meanwhile over the same period Henderson has logged a T6, a solo 12th and T13, and nothing worse than T34.
Conners wasn’t seen to best effect last time out (T44) but was coming off a three-month break. Encouragingly it was also the first round at Sea Island that let him down for a much higher finish.
Henderson has been a bit of a scoring machine this past season, only one player has scored more rounds under par. If she can unleash that scoring with the solidity offered by Conners Strokes Gained Off The Tee (11th on the PGA TOUR), then this pair could go far.
All odds listed from DraftKings, as of Tuesday December 5.
