TWO POTENTIAL WINNERS FOR THE SEASON’S FIRST MAJOR

It’s Masters week! For many, the most highly anticipated week in golf and there are some fascinating storylines this year.

Is the green jacket Scheffler’s to lose? Will McIlroy claim that elusive Grand Slam? Can one of the incredibly talented debutants cause a surprise?

Scheffler sits at a very short +450 to win another green jacket but he’s difficult to oppose given the stats he’s putting up and his recent tournament record. However, should the American not be at his very best, there are a raft of extremely gifted golfers down the odds offering great value.

In the first of two tips articles ahead of the tournament, we’re putting up two that could get their hands on a green jacket this Sunday.

JOAQUIN NIEMANN (+2800, DraftKings)

T16 here last season and LIV results suggesting he’s a better player than ever, Niemann could be on a for a huge performance at Augusta.

The Chilean is a runaway leader in the LIV standings, has won two titles this year on the LIV tour, and adds a T4 and T9 to those victories from the other three tournaments. Joaquin couldn’t be in better form. Match that with his calm and composed temperament, odds of +2500 are far too big.

After Koepka’s PGA Championship victory last season, the pressure is somewhat off the LIV players to prove a point and it’s expected that much of any LIV related heat will be directed to reigning champ Jon Rahm this week. Niemann should feel relaxed enough to play his game, which has been delivering results in abundance this year.

Riviera is often a nice guide to good Augusta performances and so Niemann’s 2022 victory in the Genesis looks a nice piece of form. A bit underrated going in, Niemann delivered wire-to-wire, showing his best golf in the opening rounds before toughing it out to play exactly as he needed to through the weekend. This was Niemenn first showing his elite level talent and mindset, he’s built on this with an array of wins since and is certainly ready to contend a major.

RUSSELL HENLEY (+5500, DraftKings)

Henley is at the peak of his career form. Sat 17th in the world rankings, the American is consistently putting up great performances at PGA TOUR events and yet seems to still be overlooked too often.

He arrives in Georgia, his home state, off the back of a solo 4th in Texas alongside a pair of other T4 finishes this season. T4 was also his Masters placing last season, his best effort to date and grounds for budding confidence around Augusta.

It’s clear Henley loves his return home. Only on debut did he miss the cut at Augusta, in the six since he’s registered nothing worse than T31. It’s perhaps no surprise given his excellent all-round game to deal with the challenges Augusta presents.

What Henley lacks in distance off-the-tee, his only real flaw against the field, he more than makes up for in driving accuracy. He’s proved on multiple occasions here to be one of the most consistent at finding fairways and greens in regulation.

Last year should have given him the confidence to believe he’s a potential Masters winner and the tune-up in Texas proved he’s ready technically. He should be in contention on Sunday.

In tomorrow’s Masters tips, we’ll be in the other markets for three more bets to complete our staking plan on the season’s first major.

All odds listed from DraftKings, as of Tuesday April 9.
