THREE PICKS FOR THIS WEEK’S EVENT FROM VIDANTA VALLARTA

There’s no denying that the weekend’s play at Riviera hurt us. Cantlay somehow turned a five-shot lead into two losing bets. Unfortunate scenarios have been a recent theme, but we’re close and attentions are fully on the Mexico Open.

In the absence of former winner and Mexico fan-favorite Jon Rahm, Tony Finau has some very skinny odds (+750) with Danish ace Nicolai Hojgaard a clear second favorite (+1600). That alone should give you an idea of the talent on display this week. None of the world’s top 20 will be at Vidanta and so perhaps a chance for a more unlikely victor.

WINNER: THOMAS DETRY (+2500, DraftKings)

Form figures of; T20 at the Farmers Insurance, T4 at Pebble Beach, T28 at the Phoenix Open, and then a week off before coming up against much weaker opposition on a track that’s perfectly suited to the Belgian.

Detry sits 11th on tour for driving this season and will relish the distance and forgiving fairways. He’s also 11th on tour for putting and so the undulating greens, of which he’s proven to be productive on the surface type too, will be very welcomed.

This will be his Mexico Open debut and he may need to show signs of improvement in his approach game if he intends to blow this competition away, but that’ll be why we’re getting +2500 because on form and course characteristics, Detry could be favorite.

TOP 5: MARK HUBBARD (+1000, DraftKings)

Hubbard closed last year with 66 and opened with a 68, if he can string that average together for all four rounds then a top five finish is likely. The American’s performances this season suggest he has the ability to do it.

Five made cuts from five starts this year plus a T4 in the stunted AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Maybe more impressively, only one of his 19 rounds has been shot over par, and even that was a +1.

Perhaps can’t go as low as Rahm and Finau have in previous editions of this, his consistency only taking him so far, but if he gets in the groove and plays aggressively enough to punch in a few 67s or better then he’ll be close to this top five mark.

TOP 5: AUSTIN ECKROAT (+1200, DraftKings)

Holding a similar sort of profile to Detry in style, Eckroat has now shown over a season that he is solid off the tee and on the green, likely making Vidanta Vallarta a happy hunting ground.

Eckroat’s debut performance here last season came after a few troublesome months. The three made cuts leading to the event this season, including a T25 at the AMEX, will install more confidence in the 25-year-old than previous.

The combination of course requirements, consistency and this significantly weaker opposition leads us to the belief that top five is well within his grasp.

All odds listed from DraftKings, as of Tuesday February 20.
