THREE SELECTIONS FOR THIS WEEK’S SIGNATURE EVENT

Another signature event is on the schedule this week from Quail Hollow before we head to Valhalla for the PGA Championship next week. Scheffler chat will be in full force then, but not this week with the world number one sitting it out.

McIlroy is a solid favorite at +650. He’s won this three times (2021 latest) and arrives of a victory in the Zurich Classic where he did the heavy lifting in his pair. It’d be hard to look beyond the Northern Irishman if it wasn’t for his hit-and-miss performances in the U.S. this season. We’re taking one to win it all and a couple to land a decent finish.

OUTRIGHT WINNER: MAX HOMA (+2200, DraftKings)

Homa made his PGA TOUR breakthrough at the 2019 edition of this, winning by a comfortable three strokes. He then won it again at its changed venue of TPC Potomac in 2022 before putting up a T8 on its return to Quail Hollow in 2023.

The reason Homa had to win it elsewhere in 2022 was due to the Presidents Cup at Quail Hollow, where the American proved his love for the course by winning four points from his four matches.

Putting the unique links challenge aside last time out, Homa recently recorded his best major finish (T3 at the Masters) and now without Scheffler about he’ll fancy his chances at victory here and a good run of it at Valhalla next week.

A winning mentality in the Wells Fargo, course confidence at Quail Hollow and form at just the right time makes Homa a far better bet than his +2200 odds suggest.

TOP 5 FINISH: ADAM SCOTT (+800, DraftKings)

Scott landed a T5 in this last season, his first appearance at the tournament for a few years. An impressive first three rounds preceded an even par Sunday but runaway leader Clark wasn’t for catching by that point.

The Australian has been steadily going about his business in recent weeks and whilst there isn’t anything flashy about his string of top 30 results, he’s consistent enough to think he’ll be close to this mark and with good course form behind him it may be enough to grab another top five place again.

There’s also a little heat around Scott and his sponsor exemption status. As one of the more level headed types in the field, he should be able to use it to transform into a result. A world class golfer that can let his golf do the talking this week.

TOP 10 FINISH: SEAMUS POWER (+1000, DraftKings)

Versus this level of competition, it’d be easy to avoid Power, but his Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow results are worth taking note of. In his last three appearances here, he’s twice got inside the top 20; T13 in 2019 and T18 last year.

12 months ago, Power arrived in North Carolina off the back of a pretty terrible March and April to go par or better every round and finish -7. Having lived locally for 10 years, it stands to reason that he’s buoyed by the trip back to Charlotte.

To land this bet the Irishman will need to produce a seasonal best, but the signs were there on a T12 at the RBC Heritage and a T21 at the Arnold Palmer, both amongst many of those he’ll be competing with this week.

All odds listed from DraftKings, as of Tuesday May 7.
