After landing the winner last year, our horse racing expert has named his two picks for the 2024 renewal of the Kentucky Derby

The first of the three Triple Crown races is on the agenda this week, as the Kentucky Derby gets underway on Saturday.

After successfully picking out Mage last year, our racing tipster is back with two selections for the upcoming contest – focusing on two runners from the stables of Brad H Cox and Steven Asmussen.

Here are the best bets for the 2024 running of the Kentucky Derby.

BEST BET: Catching Freedom

Holding some value in the market, Catching Freedom could push his way into contention in this year’s Kentucky Derby.

The three-year-old landed his first Graded success last time out, as he won the Lousiana Derby at Fair Grounds back in March.

He finished only a length behind the well-fancied Sierra Leone in the Risen Star Stakes, and he has proven that he can deal with any surface.

Catching Freedom’s pedigree is interesting, as his sire has produced a Kentucky Derby runner up in the past while his Dam’s sire brought out Triple Crown winner American Pharoah.

He sits at a decent price at time of writing and with Brad H Cox’s record in the Kentucky Derby, it likely will be backed down close to the race time.

LONGSHOT: Track Phantom

An interesting outsider from Steve Asmussen’s stable, Track Phantom could produce a big effort – if the weather goes his way.

The three-year-old already has five runs his belt, finishing in the top two in all but one of those starts.

While he did land success in the Lecomte Stakes, his best run to date arguably came in the Risen Star Stakes in sloppy conditions at Fair Grounds.

He may have been caught near the line by the current joint favorite Sierra Leone on that occasion, but he dealt with the wet conditions superbly – which could benefit him if the rain continues to fall at Churchill Downs.

Jockey Joel Rosario takes the ride – and it is interesting that his only success in the Kentucky Derby came in sloppy conditions.

Track Phantom will need to show some improvement to get the win here, but he could at least break into the frame and claim a place.
