Our Basketball expert picks out another March Madness futures selection – focusing on the Alabama Crimson Tide

March Madness is fast approaching, with only six weeks of the NCAAB regular season remaining.

Our basketball expert has already selected one longshot to finish on top in the NCAA tournament – and he is back with another selection that could at least reach the Final Four in Glendale, Arizona.

This week’s pick focuses on one of the SEC powerhouses – as the improving Alabama Crimson Tide could prove to be a surprise asset in next month’s competition.

Sitting at the top of the SEC with an 8-1 conference record, Alabama could push themselves clearer at the helm with a second signature win over Auburn this week. The Crimson Tide beat the Tigers in late January, making their mark with a 79-75 win at the Coleman Coliseum.

Alabama have escaped their inconsistent form, winning nine of their last 10 games – with their only defeat coming against #5 Tennessee back in mid-January.

While their schedule to close off the campaign is not the simplest, they do face some of the more inconsistent conference sides such as Arkansas, LSU and Texas A&M.

If they can pick up a few victories over the likes of Auburn, Tennessee and Kentucky on top of that – then the SEC Conference Championship is surely theirs.

The Crimson Tide also look appealing in terms of their current bracketology – as they are set to claim the third seed in the South side of the draw and take on Big South leaders High Point.

They then could face either Oklahoma or Boise State/Colorado in the Second Round – all of which look beatable on paper.

While Houston is currently in their side of their bracket, upsets are known to happen in March Madness – so there could be a chance they avoid them completely.

Obviously Bracketology is a guessing game until everything is set – but there are worse predicted brackets in the Midwest and the East.

The Crimson Tide offense is officially elite this season – after recording a school-record six 100-point games so far this campaign.

Alabama is currently ranked second in adjusted offense efficiency in the KenPom ratings this season – with only Purdue ranking higher than them.

Mark Sears continues to be a standout contender for the SEC Player of the Year award, while Aaron Estrada and Grant Nelson have established themselves as consistent starters.

Latrell Wrightsell Jr. has been arguably one of the most in-form shooters in the country as of late, holding a 43.3% three-point percentage this season and he is yet to miss a single free throw attempt in 2023-24 (24-24).

There are rightful concerns about their defense but if Alabama’s offense continues to be as punishing as it is, they simply could just outscore their way out of games.

The SEC Conference Title looks to be in reach for the Crimson Tide – and that hopefully will be the springboard the program needs to produce a memorable March Madness campaign.

Alabama has the offense to compete, but their defense is where they need to improve. If they get that right, then Nate Oats’ team could be heading to the Final Four for the first time in the school’s history – and maybe even further.
