Soccer returns this week, with the opening week of the MLS taking centre stage this weekend.

The end of February normally means one thing for soccer fans – the return of the MLS.

The opening fixture gets underway in Florida on Wednesday night – as Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami takes on Real Salt Lake at the Chase Staidum in Miami.

Ahead of these evening’s matchup, our soccer expert has picked out a handful of futures selections ahead of the upcoming MLS campaign.

Here are the best Futures bets for the 2024 MLS season.

MLS OUTRIGHT WINNER

Keeping the majority of their squad intact following the offseason, Philadelphia Union could continue their fine run of form by reaching the Eastern Conference Finals for the third time in four seasons.

The Union have been one of the better teams in the MLS in recent years, and their roster has gelled together well – with the likes of Julian Carranza, Daniel Gazdag and Mikael Uhre becoming vital parts of their starting line-up.

They have the tough task of overcoming the rising threat of Inter Miami, but they have been a consistent side in the Eastern Conference – and they could reach the MLS Cup Final for the second time in three seasons.

Over in the Western Conference, it seems to be a lot trickier to pin a standout team – as the conference is incredibly stacked.

Despite that, the Vancouver Whitecaps could be an undetected threat in the 2024 season. The Canadian franchise has built a respectable roster in recent seasons – and their mix of veteran experience and youthful talent could see them produce a surprise run to the MLS Cup Final.

They recruited well in the offseason, picking up the experienced Damir Kreilach and Fafa Picault in free agency – as well as signing Norwegian defender Bjorn Inge Utvik from Sarpsborg and Canadian-born centre-back Belal Halbouni from Magdeburg.

The attacking pairing of Brian White and Ryan Gauld should continue to be a threat, while the likes of Andres Cubas and Ali Ahmed will keep things ticking over in midfield.

This squad has potential. With their focus purely being on the MLS after an early exit in the CONCACAF Champions Cup, they could be a surprise contender in the playoffs come October.

TIP: Philadelphia Union Eastern Conference Winner (+950, FanDuel)

TIP: Philadelphia Union MLS Cup Winner (+1600, FanDuel)

TIP: Vancouver Whitecaps Western Conference Winner (+2000, FanDuel)

TIP: Vancouver Whitecaps MLS Cup Winner (+5000, FanDuel)

MLS GOLDEN BOOT WINNER

It’s easy to side with the likes of Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez in this market – but where’s the fun in that? Instead, we’ve gone with two longshots to claim the Golden Boot in 2024.

Despite their struggles to get a new manager into the fold, Minnesota United could offer up some exciting attacking football this season when looking at their roster.

Many teams don’t have a natural goal scorer among their ranks – but the Loons do, in the form of former Norwich City attacker Teemu Pukki.

The Finnish international landed on his feet in Saint Paul, scoring 10 goals in 14 league appearances for the Western Conference side last season.

With the likes of Emanuel Reynoso, Bongokuhle Hlongwane and Robin Lod providing service to Pukki, he could well hit a total or 20 or more MLS goals this campaign – and at a nice price too.

Our second pick could be relied on heavily for goals this season, following a few key departures and a new signing in his current position at left winger.

That is Seattle Sounders veteran Jordan Morris, who will very likely be pushed into the starting centre forward role following the arrival of exciting youngster Pedro de la Vega.

The former Lanus recruit will be tasked with providing plenty of service to the striker as well as chipping in with the odd goal – while Morris will be required to be the main goal threat for the Sounders after Heber was let go during the summer break.

Morris has showed in the past he’s capable of playing in the striker role – so he could easily become a surprise high scorer in the regular season.,

TIP: Teemu Pukki MLS Golden Boot Winner (+3700, FanDuel)

TIP: Jordan Morris MLS Golden Boot Winner (+5500, FanDuel)
