Our football expert dives into the NFL Draft markets, pinning three players to their potential future franchises

The 2024 NFL season has already begun for some fans, as the NFL Combine gets underway this week.

While that event takes up the spotlight this week, our football expert has been looking forward to the NFL Draft – as he has picked out three selections involving potential destinations for a few players.

His selections involve the likes of Michael Penix Jr., Marvin Harrison Jr. and J.J. McCarthy, who are all destined to be picked in the first round.

Here are three ‘Team To Draft’ selections for the 2024 NFL Draft.

PENIX JR FLYING HIGH?

With the eighth pick of the 2024 NFL Draft, the Falcons are in a prime position to claim a starting quarterback for their franchise.

It is a position the NFC South franchise has passed on for years in terms of the draft, with Desmond Ridder being their only quarterback draft pick since taking Matt Ryan with pick number 3 back in 2008.

Things have not gone to plan with Ridder, so it seems now is the right time to go for a quarterback. While they will very likely miss out on the likes of Caleb Williams, Drake Maye and Jayden Daniels, there will (likely) still be a Heisman Trophy finalist available for selection.

That is Washington’s Michael Penix Jr – who has a stellar six years of college football under his belt, as well as a National Championship appearance. The Huskies star brings plenty of experience to the table – playing in 48 games over six seasons, starting 45 of them.

His passing ability will suit a young and promising offense – as he could prove to be electric with the likes of Drake London, Bijan Robinson and Kyle Pitts.

The Falcons desperately need a quarterback – and Penix Jr. looks to be their man.

MASERATI MARV’S NEW HOME

Could we really see the Patriots pass up on a quarterback? The consensus is no.

But I think New England could completely throw everyone off with the third pick – and make a non-quarterback selection.

There are two areas the Patriots will want to improve – one being the quarterback position, the other being at wide receiver.

The AFC East franchise does not have a big-name receiver – with Juju Smith-Schuster currently leading the wideout unit. While that could change in free agency, they may opt for the draft instead and choose to pick up a veteran quarterback to start things off under new head coach Raheem Morris.

It wouldn’t be a big shock either if the Pats chose to go with Harrison Jr. The Ohio State graduate was widely considered to be the best receiver in college football over the last couple of seasons – being named a unanimous All-American twice as well as claiming the Fred Biletnikoff award for the 2023 campaign.

Many are seeing Harrison going to the Cardinals at pick number four – but I reckon the Pats might opt to go for him instead and either trade up for another option at quarterback or even stick with Mac Jones.

JUMPING UP FOR J.J.

Let’s stick with that quarterback dilemma for New England.

With legendary coach Bill Belichick leaving, it’s time for a fresh new start for the Patriots franchise. New head coach = new quarterback looks to be the concurrent theme there at this stage.

However, I don’t think the Patriots will want to pass up on Marvin Harrison Jr – so why not take Maserati Marv, then trade up and still get that much-needed quarterback?

Like I mentioned earlier, the likes of Caleb Williams and Drake Maye will be long gone at this point – but there could still be some talented quarterbacks up for grabs.

How about a National Championship winner and Rose Bowl MVP for starters? Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy could prove to be a solid fit for the Patriots if they are bold enough to make some trades to bump themselves up for a second draft pick.

It’s an outside shot – but the NFL Draft does have a history of kicking up surprises.
