The 150th edition of The Open Championship is set to take place at the home of golf in little under three weeks with over 150 golfers ready fight it out for the prestigious Claret Jug.

The Open returns to St Andrews in Scotland the first time since 2015, marking a prolonged seven-year break between tournaments at the course for the only major to happen away from the US.

Notoriously a tricky field to pick apart, the UF Team has put in the early research to give you a few nice plays of the futures market.

BEST SELECTION – SHANE LOWRY (+2500 with PointsBet)

The 2019 Open Championship winner is selected to make it two wins in just three renewals of the prestigious tournament.

Whilst this may seem a tall order, his fellow countryman managed back-to-back Open victories in 2007 & 2008, and a tied 12th finish in Lowry’s assault of the same feat last year highlights his credentials.

A two-time PGA TOUR winner, Lowry ran away with the 2019 Open Championship by six shots and, excluding a blip in the recent US Open where he missed the cut by a single shot, he’s in just the sort of form to produce a similar performance this year. Until the US Open, Lowry had been yet to miss a cut this year, finishing inside the top 15 in seven of his 10 tournaments played.

Lowry’s ball control has been almost impeccable this year and that’ll pay dividends around the Old Course at St Andrews in his challenge for the winner’s share of the $11,500,000 purse.

NEXT BEST – PATRICK CANTLAY (+2800 with PointsBet)

The market is justifiably headed by the world’s best golfers, with Rahm, McIlroy, Morikawa and Scheffler all shorter than +1500 to win one of the toughest tournaments on the tour. However, only Scottie Scheffler has won as many tournaments as Patrick Cantlay through 2021-2022 (4).

With a winning mentality and T14 & T3 finishes in his last two tournaments, Cantlay is being hugely overlooked to pick up the Claret Jug.

The Californian isn’t uncomfortable away from home soil. His first Open Championship outing ended with a very creditable T12 finish.

VALUE PICK – JUSTIN ROSE (+5500 with PointsBet)

The Open Championship has been a relatively happy hunting ground for Justin Rose over the years, with three top 10 finishes and just five missed cuts in 19 outings. One of those top 10s came at this very course in 2015, with Rose shooting under par every round to finish tied 6th.

It’s no surprise either that Rose puts in consistently good performances in this major with his game and mental fortitude clearly suited to links courses.

It’s been almost 10-years since Rose picked up his sole major title but a recent tied 4th in the Canadian Open with a tied 13th finish in the PGA Championship a few weeks earlier shows the Englishman isn’t struggling for form out on the course.
